In 2004, Sunamganj district in northeastern Bangladesh faced severe flash floods that devastated the region, damaging homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods. In response, a Post-Flood Rehabilitation Project was launched in Tahirpur Upazila, supported by Oxfam. The project, running from January to May 2005, focused on restoring essential services and rebuilding community resilience.
Key interventions included repairing damaged homes, reconstructing vital infrastructure, and restoring access to clean water and sanitation facilities. The project also emphasized community participation, ensuring that local residents were actively involved in the rehabilitation efforts. This collaborative approach not only expedited recovery but also strengthened the community’s capacity to manage future disasters.
The 2004 rehabilitation initiative in Sunamganj serves as a testament to the effectiveness of coordinated efforts between international organizations and local communities in disaster recovery and resilience building.
