The project titled “Emergency Support for Flash Flood Sufferers in Sunamganj” was initiated as a rapid humanitarian response to support communities severely affected by the devastating flash floods in Dowarabazar Upazila, Sunamganj district. Funded by Muslim Charity, UK and implemented by Efforts for Rural Advancement (ERA), the project focused on providing emergency shelter support to the most vulnerable and displaced families who lost their homes or faced severe damage due to the disaster.
The flash floods caused widespread destruction, leaving thousands of people without shelter, exposing them to harsh weather, poor sanitation, and increased health risks. Recognizing the urgency, this project aimed to restore dignity, safety, and protection for flood-affected households by ensuring access to temporary and transitional shelter solutions.
Under this initiative, ERA conducted rapid needs assessments in coordination with local authorities and community leaders to identify the most affected and at-risk families. Priority was given to women-headed households, elderly individuals, persons with disabilities, and families with young children.
Key interventions included:
- Distribution of emergency shelter kits, including tarpaulins, bamboo, ropes, and other essential materials for temporary shelter construction.
- Technical support and guidance on safe shelter construction, adapted to the local flood-prone context.
- Community awareness sessions on shelter safety, hygiene, and disaster preparedness to reduce future risks.
The project not only provided immediate relief but also helped lay the foundation for early recovery and resilience by promoting community involvement and coordination with local disaster management committees.
By addressing the urgent need for safe shelter, this project significantly contributed to protecting lives, restoring dignity, and supporting the recovery of vulnerable families in flood-affected Haor areas of Sunamganj. The partnership between Muslim Charity and ERA reflects a strong commitment to humanitarian action and local capacity building in times of crisis.
