Tanguar Haor, a vital wetland ecosystem in northeastern Bangladesh and a designated Ramsar site, faces growing threats from overexploitation and climate change. The Community-Based Sustainable Management of Tanguar Haor Project (CBSMTHP) works to protect this ecologically sensitive area while securing the livelihoods of local communities who depend on its resources.
The project engages fishing communities, farmers, and women’s groups in sustainable natural resource management, promoting climate-resilient farming, responsible fishing practices, and alternative income opportunities like eco-tourism. By strengthening community-led conservation efforts and fostering collaboration between residents, local authorities, and environmental experts, CBSMTHP ensures that both the wetland ecosystem and the people who rely on it can thrive.
Through this initiative, Tanguar Haor’s rich biodiversity is preserved, while communities gain the knowledge and resources needed for long-term sustainability. The project demonstrates how environmental protection and human well-being can go hand in hand when local stakeholders are empowered as stewards of their natural heritage.
