Emergency Post Flood Rehabilitation, Water & Sanitation project

In 2004, Sunamganj district in northeastern Bangladesh experienced devastating flash floods that severely impacted its communities. The floods submerged vast areas, damaging infrastructure and disrupting access to clean water and sanitation facilities. In response, an Emergency Post-Flood Rehabilitation: Water & Sanitation Project was implemented to address these critical needs.

The project, supported by NGO Forum, the Government of Bangladesh, and UNICEF, was executed in two phases from October 2004 to April 2005. It focused on restoring access to safe drinking water and improving sanitation in the most affected upazilas, including Sunamganj Sadar, Derai, Sulla, and Dowarabazar. Key interventions included the repair and disinfection of damaged tube wells, distribution of water purification tablets, and reconstruction of latrines to prevent disease outbreaks. Moreover, hygiene education campaigns were conducted to promote safe water practices and sanitation awareness among the affected populations.

This coordinated effort played a vital role in mitigating the public health crisis following the floods, helping communities recover and build resilience against future disasters.
