Bangladesh, located in the tropical region, experiences 78% of global lightning incidents, making it one of the most lightning-prone countries in the world. Lightning strikes are a significant cause of human casualties, with an average of 300 deaths annually, according to the United Nations.
The pre-monsoon period (April–June), particularly during the Nor’wester (Kaalboishakhi) season, sees the highest frequency and intensity of lightning strikes. The Sylhet division, especially Sunamganj, is among the most vulnerable regions, with rural farmers and agricultural workers accounting for 70% of fatalities during outdoor activities such as farming, fishing, and herding cattle. Lightning also causes injuries, trauma, crop damage, livestock fatalities, and biodiversity loss. Climate change is exacerbating these events by increasing atmospheric moisture and storm potential. This initiative aims to address the critical need for lightning preparedness and response in Sunamganj by building local capacity, raising awareness, and providing emergency resources to mitigate the impacts of lightning strikes.
Sunamganj, particularly Dowara Bazar Upazila, is highly vulnerable to multiple hazards, including flash floods and lightning strikes. The region’s low elevation and proximity to the Haor areas make it prone to frequent flooding, which disrupts daily life, damages infrastructure, and exacerbates vulnerabilities. Additionally, lightning strikes during the monsoon season and pre-monsoon Nor’wester (Kaalboishakhi) storms pose a significant threat, with recent incidents resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries. This underscores the urgent need for improved early warning systems, community awareness programs, and preparedness measures. The involvement of Efforts for Rural Advancement (ERA), a local partner based in Sunamganj with extensive experience in emergency response and preparedness, adds significant value to this initiative. ERA’s deep understanding of the local context, strong community access, and proven track record of working in the region will ensure the effective implementation of activities and sustained impact.
Objective
To enhance institutional and community resilience to multi hazard vulnerabilities in Dowara Bazar Upazila
Expected Outcomes
- Improved capacity of local disaster management committees (UDMC) to address Multi Hazard Risk risks according to the SoD.
- Increased awareness among communities and schools about multi hazard preparedness.
- Enhanced emergency response readiness through the distribution of emergency kits, emergency boat and strengthened coordination mechanisms.
