Promotion of Integrated Homestead Production System for Sustainable Livelihoods of the Poor People

Promoting Integrated Homestead Production Systems (IHPS) offered a transformative pathway to sustainable livelihoods for poor and land-constrained households in Bangladesh. By combining vegetable gardening, small-scale livestock rearing, poultry, aquaculture, and agroforestry within limited homestead spaces, IHPS enhances food security, nutrition, and income generation. Studies in regions like Sylhet and Sunamganj have demonstrated that such systems significantly improve household resilience and economic well-being, particularly among women who often lead these initiatives. Innovations like the Integrated Floating Cage Aquageoponics System (IFCAS) further exemplify the potential of IHPS by enabling simultaneous fish and vegetable cultivation in shaded or waterlogged areas, optimizing resource use and productivity. To maximize the benefits of IHPS, it is crucial to invest in community-based training, access to microcredit, and supportive policies that empower rural populations, especially women, to adopt and sustain these integrated practices.
