The project titled “Renovation of Sunamganj Girls’ Home and Flood-Affected Schools” was initiated in response to the widespread infrastructural damage caused by the flash floods that struck the Sunamganj region in 2022. This humanitarian intervention was implemented by Efforts for Rural Advancement(ERA) with generous funding support from Muslim Charity, UK.
Sunamganj Sadar Upazila, being one of the worst-affected areas, witnessed significant damage to educational institutions and child care facilities, including the Sunamganj Girls’ Home—a critical residential institution for orphaned and vulnerable girls. The flood not only damaged physical infrastructure but also disrupted the education, safety, and well-being of hundreds of students, especially girls from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Key objectives of the project included:
- Renovating the Sunamganj Girls’ Home, ensuring safe and hygienic living conditions for the residents by repairing dormitories, sanitation facilities, and essential services like clean water and electricity.
- Rehabilitating flood-affected schools by repairing classrooms, school furniture, boundary walls, and sanitation infrastructure to create a safe and conducive learning environment.
- Supporting the continuity of education and child protection by ensuring schools and child care institutions could resume normal operations post-disaster.
- Enhancing disaster resilience of educational and residential facilities through improved construction materials and techniques.
The renovation work was carried out in close coordination with local government bodies, school management committees, and the Department of Social Services. The project focused on child-centered recovery, ensuring that girls and young learners could return to a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment.By restoring essential infrastructure and services, this project significantly contributed to the post-disaster recovery process in Sunamganj. It helped rebuild hope and stability for vulnerable children, particularly girls, and reaffirmed ERA’s commitment to education, protection, and community resilience in times of crisis.
