At just 11 years old, Ziba Sultana Mim, a sixth-grade student from Palash High School in Palash Union at Bishwambharpur Upazila of Sunamganj District, carries dreams far greater than the challenges she faces each day. Living with her parents and five siblings—two sisters and three brothers—Ziba belongs to a humble family sustained by her father’s hard labor as a day laborer. The only asset the family owns is the small piece of land on which their modest home stands.
Life is far from easy. With a very limited income, Ziba’s father struggles to meet the basic needs of his children, let alone afford educational expenses. Yet, despite the hardship, Ziba’s eyes sparkle with hope and ambition. She is deeply passionate about her studies, with science being her favorite subject. Inspired by the courage and leadership of Malala Yousafzai, Ziba dreams of becoming a doctor and serving her community with compassion and care.
Her love for learning is matched by her enthusiasm for cultural programs and sports, which provide her with joy and a growing sense of confidence. But the harsh reality of poverty often casts a shadow over her aspirations. There have been times when her father couldn’t afford even basic school supplies, and the threat of having to discontinue her education loomed large.
At this pivotal moment, ERA stepped in through the Education Champion Network (ECN-7) project. Hearing about Ziba’s situation, the organization mobilized support from local community members. A generous and respected local figure responded to the call and arranged for Ziba’s school admission, along with essential learning materials. What began as a gesture of kindness toward one girl soon inspired a wave of compassion—motivating other well-off individuals to come forward and support more underprivileged students in the area.
Ziba’s story has become a powerful testament to the mission of ERA. Her resilience and determination have sparked hope among many girls in her community, showing them that education is not beyond reach. Her journey has not only brought joy and pride to her parents but has also served as a catalyst for changing mindsets and opening doors to leadership through learning.
Today, Ziba continues her education with renewed energy and an unshakable spirit. Her story reminds us all that when a community unites to lift up its children, dreams can flourish—even in the most difficult circumstances.
